Powell, Adam Clayton, Jr.

Político estadounidense. En 1937 sucedió a su padre como pastor de la Iglesia bautista abisinia, en Harlem, Nueva York, y aumentó su feligresía a 13.000 personas. Elegido en 1941 para integrar el Consejo municipal de Nueva York, fue el primer afromaericano que perteneció a ese organismo. En la Cámara de Representantes (1945–67, 1969–71), patrocinó numerosas leyes de asistencia social: ley de salario mínimo, leyes contra la pobreza y proyectos de ley que disponían asistencia federal a la educación. Conocido por su comportamiento exuberante y su falta de preocupación por el decoro parlamentario, fue objeto de un juicio por difamación y de una investigación por falta de ética financiera. En 1967 la Cámara votó por expulsarlo, pero la Corte Suprema falló posteriormente que el proceder de la Cámara era inconstitucional.
